Human Rights in NGO Strategy Development
We don’t need non-profits that go into communities and provide all the needs of the people without teaching them to take ownership of their rights and responsibilities.
In this era, we should shift from the charity of NGOs to a human rights approach to development.
As much as NGOs and non-profits can continue to provide the basic services for the people, there is a need to permanently shift to the role of advocacy for the fulfillment of our human rights. There is a need for collective responsibility among citizens.
No longer should the citizens have to do for themselves what the government was elected to provide. How long would the non-profit sector continue to provide these basic needs? A more sustainable approach is to ensure government accountability to the people.
I know there are arguments that the government does not have adequate resources to provide for the needs of the people. However, it is not the allocation of resources that matter, but the level of investment. So the question is, how is the government even spending the minimum resources it has in order to fulfill the obligations to its citizens?
